PAX WEST 2017 IS OVER.
Glad and sad at the same time - I’m exhausted and overwhelmed, but I know there are some games out there that I didn’t get my mitts on and that bothers me. C’est la vie.
My struggle has borne a few seeds of promise; let us review.
BEST OF SHOW - Floor Kids
Kids break dancing to Kid Koala beats; hand drawn graphics; tons of flavor. I spent too much of the devs time just gushing about how much I loved this game (on two separate occasions - they are gracious human beings). Apparently it had been in development as a mobile/tablet title and shown at a lot of industry shows, but figuring out the controls was still a bit of a challenge. Applying and earning a spot with Nintendo's Nindies gave the game a new direction - one with buttons and joysticks on the Switch, and I couldn't be happier for them (or me to play it).
From the art style, the music, and the hip-hop/breaking community - it’s all my jam.
And the runners up….
Dragon Ball Fighterz - it’s a Dragon Ball fighting game (FLASHBACK TO BEING 9 WATCHING DRAGON BALL - I LOVE IT) - nothing new, except that it finally lives up to being the unicorn of being both a visual representation of the show, and a very solid fighting game.
Dunk Lords - It's NBA Jam - 2v2 arcade basketball, but with crazy characters, power ups, and upper cuts. Between every quarter, there's a Counter-Strike style upgrade system where you can equip your character with gear that increases your character's abilities. It’s fly.
Tiny Metal - It’s Advance Wars (....but not). I backed this game on Kickstarter but it didn't meet it's funding goal, so I was surprised to see it & super happy it’s still coming along (and coming to Switch!). It has a fun cartoon art style with the classic grid/tactics presentation and that Advance Wars-style action.
Phantom Brigade - Big, customizable mechs (MECHS YESSSS) fighting in fully destructible environments, and CRAZY amounts of detail - like, you can zoom in and look at individual machines’ and the damage they've taken. All of it wrapped up in a tactics game (<3<3<3<3<3).
Keeping tabs on games we've been following (WHY AREN’T THESE OUT?!??!?!)
Battle Chef Brigade - This game will be on every list of games I want until it actually comes out. We got some cool new tidbits, and I got to catch up with some of the devs and now know it's coming out this holiday season (and coming to Switch!)
Wandersong - Ditto. It will be on every list until it is out. I did speak with the one man band that is Greg, and I'm hopeful that we will see a release in the coming year.
Wattam - Anything that looks this silly and fun, you know I will be there. The fact that it's creator is also of Katamari Damacy fame only makes sense, and only makes me want it that much more.
Cuphead - Because I have only been waiting forever. Good news is that it’s coming out this month (9/29). Know that almost anything with hand drawn graphics will have me taking a second look. And probably a third, fourth, fifth, and so on.
