In our continuing series to highlight the most intriguing titles to come in 2016, let's take a look at..............
Hyper Light Drifter
Back in the happy-go-lucky days of 2013, the masses were still just opening their naive eyes to the Kickstarter revolution, but the gaming world had already heeded the call of crowd funding, with millions of dollars already committed to potentially risky projects. One project that took part in the fray was a pixelized action RPG called Hyper Light Drifter. The game seemed to make a strong impression, with over $600k being pledged.
The game takes heavy influence from 16 bit action RPGs (right down to borrowing the look) and places you in what seems to be a post-apocalyptic robot-laden world where there doesn't seem to be much in the way of friendly characters. What the world presents to you instead is exploration and action - multiple weapon and enemy types seems to hint at certain strategies and timing will be critical to defeating enemies and progressing. It's definitely a modern engine running underneath with the amount of complexity, action and movement going on, but it's heart lies in 1994.
Estimated to launch in June 2014, the game has obviously slipped a bit, but in the mean time it's benefited from some media attention as word slowly spread. Now slated as a Spring '16 release, I think it's fair to believe in the game being released in this calendar year, and I really do think it will be worth the wait (although that's what they thought in 2014, so don't hold me to it).
