In our continued look at games to come in 2016, let's take a look at another indie side scroller......
And while the two may share the same genre, you'd be wrong to think they share many other similarities.
I spoke with Jean Canellas, developer of Death's Gambit, at PAX 2015 last summer. After our discussion about his game, the biggest take away was how he's taken the game's two biggest influences - Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus - and interpreted what makes those 3D games special into a 2D format. Battling enemies is based on timing and strategy with blocking and rolling as mainstays.
Boss battles are against enemies so big you must scale them in order to expose their weaknesses.
The look of the game is dark, yet vibrant. The amount of detail that has gone into the animations and levels is amazing. While it is uses pixel design, it doesn't feel retro - more of a preferred aesthetic.
I'm really excited for this game, and while it doesn't have a specific release date yet, I'm hoping 2016 is the year we get to experience it.
